Widely known as a top apparel company, Russell Corporation set out to expand its position as an athletic company. In 2003, Russell Corp. acquired leading ball producer Spalding. In the summer of 2004, Russell Corp. solidified its position as a leading sporting goods company by acquiring athletic equipment manufacturers American Athletic, Inc (AAI) and Huffy Sports, including brands BPI and Hydra-RIB respectively.

Founded in 1876 by Hall of Fame pitcher Albert G. Spalding, Springfield, Massachusetts-based Spalding is one of the oldest and best-known global sporting goods brands and a leading producer and marketer of basketballs, volleyballs, footballs, softballs (Dudley brand) and soccer balls.
American Athletic, Inc. (AAI) began in 1954. Over the years, the company has expanded its sporting goods line to include over 1,600 products for the sports of basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, baseball, cheerleading and other gymnasium components. Headquartered in Jefferson, Iowa, the company operates three facilities totaling over 240,000 square feet.
Since its founding in 1961, Hydra-RIB has become a well-known name among basketball programs worldwide. Headquartered in Sussex, Wisconsin, the company operates over 200,000 square feet.

Spalding is the official game ball provider for the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Arena Football League, the Major Indoor Soccer League and over 200 college and university programs.
Fifteen NBA teams, including the Detroit Pistons, Dallas Mavericks and the 2005 World Champion San Antonio Spurs, as well as perennial NCAA powers such as North Carolina, UCLA, Kentucky and Kansas, select us for their equipment needs. Spalding is also the official basketball equipment supplier to the NCAA Final Four.
Our volleyball systems are used extensively for major national and international events, from high school to college. Spalding is the Official Net Systems Supplier to USA Volleyball, governing body to the sport of volleyball.
